Joannie Rochette's mother ( Thérèse Rochette ) Dies

A fortnight ago, the world was transfixed by the inspirational performance of a 24-year-old woman who compartmentalized her grief, competing in Vancouver just days after her mother's sudden death.

(Thérèse Rochette was struck down by a massive heart attack within hours of arriving in the city to watch her daughter's bid for a medal at the Games.)

Joannie Rochette dedicated that performance to her mom and, last week, placed the bronze medal on her mother's casket at the delayed funeral.

Luger from Georgia dead after high-speed crash at Olympics

Nodar Kumaritashvili was travelling a measured 134 km/h at the finish line of the course in his sixth and final practice run for the men’s singles luge event, but lost control and hurtled off the track. In a split-second, his sled careered off to the right and he was launched left, brushing a wooden partition that sits atop the side of the track, presumably meant to contain airborne racers within the track. The 21-year-old from Borjomi, Georgia, was dead. The safety of the Whistler Sliding Centre had been called into question many times before this fatal crash. Earlier in the day, world champion and Olympic gold medal favourite Armin Zoeggeler had crashed late in his run, although he was not hurt.Nodar Kumaritashvili competed in five World Cup races this season, finishing 44th in the world standings.

The 2010 Winter Olympics

The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics, were held on February 12–28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with some events held in the suburbs of Richmond, West Vancouver and the University Endowment Lands, and in the resort town of Whistler. Approximately 2,600 athletes from 82 nations participated in 86. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games were being organized by the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC). The 2010 Winter Olympics were the third Olympics hosted by Canada, and the first by the province of British Columbia. Previously, Canada hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta.
Following Olympic tradition, the then-current Vancouver mayor, Sam Sullivan, received the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The flag was raised on February 28, 2006, in a special ceremony and was on display at Vancouver City Hall until the Olympic opening ceremony. The event was officially opened by Governor General Michaëlle Jean.
With 14 gold, Canada broke the record for the most gold medals won at a single Winter Olympics, which was 13, set by the former Soviet Union in 1976 and Norway in 2002.The United States won the most medals in total, their second time doing so at the Winter Olympics, and broke the record for the most medals won at a single Winter Olympics, with 37, which was held by Germany in 2002 at 36 medals. Athletes from Slovakia and Belarus won the first Winter Olympic gold medals for their nations.

What are the Olympics?

The Olympic Games are a major international event featuring summer and winter sports, in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The Games are currently held every two years in even-numbered years, with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating, although they occur every four years within their respective seasonal games. Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. The IOC has since become the governing body of the Olympic Movement, whose structure and actions are defined by the Olympic Charter.
